Ski & Snowshoe event for the coming weekend!

Tentative Moonlight Ski and Snowshoe This Weekend
Sam Young has another brilliant moonlight ski and snowshoe planned this weekend if conditions are favorable.  This time, the destination will be in the Mount Marathon Bowl!

The event could happen on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday night with the first choice being Friday.  Sam will choose a night when the sky is somewhat clear and winds low with minimal avalanche danger.  The moon will be shining in the bowl long before it hits the valley floor.  So, Friday from 6 to 10pm will be a good time frame.  With each evening, the moon comes up a couple of hours later.  Keep an eye on your email on Friday afternoon for an announcement.

Plan for an hour to hike up the jeep trail, across the bench, and to the edge of the bowl.  Head lamps are necessary for the tall timber surrounding the jeep trail.  Ice and exposed rocks on the lower section of the jeep trail will be best traveled on foot with clawed snowshoes, katoolas on your shoes, or some kind of shoe kleets.  Plan on attaching skis to your pack for the initial hike up through the trees- once onto the bench, the skiing should be great from there!

Please plan on leaving room for 1-2 pieces of firewood in your pack.  As usual, a headlamp, lots of layers, warm drinks, and goodies to share are recommended.

Learn to X-C Ski Class set for this Saturday at 10:30am
Lend your gear to your non-skiing friends and get them out on the trails with us!
Local physical therapist and ski enthusiast Natalie Sook is offering a “Learn to Cross-Country Ski” clinic on Saturday, January 30 at 10:30am.  Please arrive early so that you are ready to start by 10:30.  The likely location will be Bear Lake at the public access on Old Sawmill Road.  Watch the website Friday for a final announcement on location.

The course is $15 for the general public and $10 for Ski Club members (free for Trail User and Trail Meister member levels).  Please bring cash or check in the exact amount on the day of the clinic.  The course is for adults and children over age 10.

We recommend bringing waxless classic skis (scaly on the bottom).

Update From Sam Young !!!!!    Change on the Moonlight Ski and Snowshoe this weekend...see below Update!!!!!
Tentative Moonlight Ski and Snowshoe This Weekend

Tonight, Thursday, there was very little to no rain in the Snow River area when I was driving home from Anchorage around 7:00 p.m. and the moon was big and bright enough to shine ample light through the moving cloud cover. I see the same pattern in the forecast for Friday night. I am going to cancel any plans for Friday and aim at Saturday 6-10:00 p.m. to meet up at the Jeep trail. Please inform everyone, that you sent the previous email to, of these important changes. Also include that they should plan for 1-2 hours to hike up into the bowl, instead of one hour.

I hope we meet up,
Sam Young
